This project aims to build a multidisciplinary, community-partnered team to advance ancestry-aware genomic medicine for Hispanic and Indigenous populations. It focuses on addressing limitations in genomic databases and research participation by partnering with the Indigenous-led organization CIELO to co-develop culturally responsive research strategies and improve diagnostic outcomes.

Specific Aims:

  1. To identify and reduce barriers to research participation among Indigenous and Hispanic communities through community-engaged methods (e.g., focus groups and co-designed tools).
  2. To improve genomic analysis by incorporating ancestry-informed approaches to increase diagnostic yield for underrepresented populations.

The team integrates expertise in clinical genetics, bioethics, community engagement, and computational genomics, alongside Indigenous community leadership and lived perspectives.

Team Building Activities include:

  • Indigenous cultural awareness training offered by CIELO: A training program for the research and clinical team to build cultural understanding of Indigenous communities, improve engagement, and inform research design and implementation.
  • Team building dinner at a place chosen by CIELO team: An in-person gathering to build trust, strengthen relationships, and encourage open dialogue between academic and community partners.
  • Half day retreat to co-design focus groups and the “Introduction of Precision Medicine to Community Members” workshop: A collaborative retreat to co-develop research materials, design focus groups, and ensure culturally appropriate communication of genomic and precision medicine concepts.
