SC CTSI Role

Neil Bahroos, MS, MBA is an Associate Professor of Research in the Department of Population and Public Health Sciences at the University of Southern California (USC). He serves as the Chief Research Informatics Officer (CRIO) at the Keck School of Medicine of USC (KSOM). As part of this role, Neil is responsible for USC’s Health Data Innovation Program (HDIP), which includes building a state-of-the-art, unified Electronic Data Warehouse on Cloud-based architecture that supports both the health enterprise and KSOM’s research mission. Neil leads the charge in new-age capabilities in data discovery and using predictive analytics to advance translational medicine. In his role as Director of Clinical Research Informatics at the SC Clinical and Translational Science Institute (SC CTSI), Neil is responsible for developing and sustaining partnerships with CHLA, DHS, CTSA Hubs and others to build networks and further support research activities. In addition to directing data science initiatives, he works on data science capabilities using advanced statistics, artificial intelligence and machine learning for the purposes of supporting the CTSI mission and empowering investigators.

Professional Background

Neil is a visionary data scientist, with over 20 years of leadership and experience in the information technology and healthcare informatics field. He is known for translating complex technologies into meaningful opportunities and executing enterprise-wide governance and management systems. He is an expert in the fields of information technology, informatics and data science. His personal program of research focuses on predictive analytics and health outcomes, as well as digital transformation of healthcare systems. He has published over 25 high impact peer-reviewed papers in the fields of data science and informatics.

Previously, Neil served as the Chief Data Officer and Vice President for Shirley Ryan AbilityLab at Northwestern University in Chicago. In the past, he held leadership roles in biomedical informatics, data science, supercomputing and information technology at the University of Illinois Hospital & Health Sciences System, the University of Illinois at Chicago, the University of Chicago, and the Hospital for Sick Children at the University of Toronto. Neil has also worked in both the public and private sector. He has worked on the Human Genome Project as an informatician, has worked for private R & D companies, and for large government initiatives.

Neil earned a BS with honors in Human Biology and an MS in Computer Science and Software Engineering from the University of Toronto and Bioinformatics from University of British Columbia. He received an MBA in Data Analytics from Purdue University.
