Professional Background
Dr. Buchanan is the founding director of the SC CTSI. Administratively, he brings to the SC CTSI more than 30 years of experience leading clinical and translational research programs at USC.
Scientifically, Dr. Buchanan led an interdisciplinary translational team whose ground-breaking research has helped define mechanisms and clinical approaches for prevention and treatment of gestational and type 2 diabetes.
Buchanan’s national honors include the Norbert Freinkel Award and a Distinguished Clinical Scientist Award from the American Diabetes Association, as well as election to the Association of American Physicians. Locally, Dr. Buchanan has received two of USC’s top honors for research – the Associates Award for Excellence in Research and Scholarship and designation as University Professor.
Dr. Buchanan received his medical degree and completed residency training in internal medicine at the University of Iowa, then completed a combined clinical and research fellowship in endocrinology and metabolism at Northwestern University under the mentorship of Norbert Freinkel. He has been at USC since 1986.
