Education Resource Center (ERC) Series: Teaching and Assessing Skills that Matter Most: How to Align Learning Objectives to Professional Competencies in Clinical and Translational Science
The field of clinical and translational science has proposed novel professional competencies such as being a process innovator and a systems thinker. This sounds great, but how do we teach this? Faculty face challenges translating stated professional competencies for this field into specific and measurable learning objective skills that can be taught and assessed in their courses and training events.
In this 90-minute interactive workshop presented by the SC CTSI Education Resource Center (ERC) at the University of Southern California, participants will actively collaborate in breakout groups and while using the chat to select, plan, and share updates to the design of their learning objectives with the goal of better aligning them to professional competencies.
This workshop is recommended for university faculty and/or those assisting faculty with the design and teaching of their courses or training events related to clinical and translational science. In particular, examples will focus on graduate courses. This might also be of interest to graduate students who are TAs. This workshop is capped at 200 participants. All participants will receive a follow-up digital toolkit of materials.
By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to
● Select a professional competency relevant to their course or training event in clinical and translational science
● State the learning objective skill(s) aligned to the chosen competency
● Plan how the aligned learning objective skill could be assessed
