One of the major risk factors of type 2 diabetes (T2DM) is obesity, which has become a pandemic in developed countries. We have discovered a central regulator of metabolism that is encoded in the mitochondrial genome, representing an undexplored biology with significant cellular activity. Mitochondiral peptides are an entirely novel therapeutic/preventive target of T2DM.
