Meet Elizabeth Burner, a Recipient of Translational Science Pilot Funding

We sat down with Dr. Elizabeth Burner, Research Director of the Department of Emergency Medicine at the Keck School of Medicine, about how pilot funding supported her team’s work.

January 28, 2026

What does the pilot funding mean to you and your project team?
Dr Burner:  This pilot funding means we can expand our current fledging program to a full capacity clinical trial accelerator, with student coordinators screening Emergency Department studies for several studies at the same time, expanding our reach and improving the capabilities for decentralized trials. We are also creating a pathway to careers in clinical research for undergraduate students in our local universities, and creating a toolkit so others can create similar programs.

What will the pilot funding allow you to do?
Dr Burner: We can collect more robust data on study enrollment efficiency, and partner with the SC CTSI to utilize the locally adapted web-based Learning Management System (LMS), called the SC CTSI Learning Network. The LMS will provide streamlined student onboarding, training, and assessment tracking, reducing the administrative burden for program operation

What is the main goal of your project?
Dr Burner:  Our project has 3 aims as part of the expansion of EM-CPR to: (1) Estimate Impact on Clinical Trial Capacity; (2) Evaluate Training Processes and Workforce Pipeline Development Outcomes; and (3) Develop a Toolkit for Dissemination and Implementation

What does this project do in terms of addressing Translational Science?
Dr Burner:  I think there are a few key translational science principles our pilot addresses. (1) Produce Generalizable Solutions for Common and Persistent Challenges; (2) Prioritize Initiatives That Address Unmet Needs: reaching populations infrequently enrolled in trials and (3) Utilize Boundary-Crossing Partnerships.
