21st Century Tools for Sharing Your Science: Video Abstracts and Podcasts, Two Practical Examples and Success Stories

Overview

Dr. Watkins will introduce two platforms that help scientists disseminate their research through today’s more accessible online media.

  1. He will explain how researchers are using the online platform We Share Science to create and share video abstracts about their science, and he will highlight examples of successful use cases of using the platform as part of a broader communications and dissemination strategy.
  2. He will also show how researchers can work with Parsing Science, a podcast where researchers share the unpublished stories behind their scientific discoveries. From unexpected challenges to surprising results, researchers breakdown the scientific process to tell the stories that don’t make it into research journals. Dr. Watkins will share examples, lessons learned, and advice on reaching new audiences.

Speaker

Ryan Watkins, PhD, Professor, George Washington University, Founder of We Share Science and co-host of Parsing Science

Learning Objectives

  • Understand the potential and limitations of using the online platforms We Share Science and Parsing Science to share research
  • Describe examples of how researchers have used video abstracts and podcasts to share their science on these two platforms
