As a Senior Mentor for the Research Success Teams, Dr. Bhalla works closely with investigators who have received career development awards (or are actively pursuing one) to identify and address challenges that arise for their continued progress towards research independence. As a facilitator for the Mentor Training Program series, she is also involved in equipping faculty with effective mentoring strategies and promoting best practice in research mentorship.

Professional Background
Dr. Bhalla is a pediatric critical care physician, Associate Professor of Clinical Pediatrics, and clinical researcher at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA) and the University of Southern California. She is a graduate of the University of California, Berkeley and received her medical degree at Washington University in St. Louis. She completed her pediatrics residency at Children’s Memorial Hospital and her pediatric critical care fellowship at CHLA. She joined the CHLA faculty after completion of her training in 2011.
Her research focuses on methods to improve care for mechanically ventilated critically ill children, particularly those with pediatric Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS). She has active studies in pediatric ARDS related to epidemiology, pathophysiology, biomarkers, and post-intensive care unit recovery. She currently has funding through the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to investigate ventilator management strategies, ancillary therapies, the physiologic biomarker of dead space, and multiple organ dysfunction in pediatric ARDS. Dr. Bhalla plans to use these observational studies to inform future clinical trials to test therapies to improve both short and long-term outcomes of pediatric ARDS.
