SC CTSI Role

Melissa is responsible for all aspects of patient and research related care, acting as a liaison between the patient's personal physician and the research conducted. Melissa supports all phases of research studies and actively participates in clinical operations and management. Clinically she provides general and preventive care, performing physical exams and clinical assessments for protocol specific research. As an active member of our multidisciplinary team she prescribes medications, monitors and manages patients' response to treatment, collects data, recruits patients, and provides valuable input for initial protocol design up until study completion.

Professional Background

Melissa brings an extensive background in science, which includes a BS in Cellular and Molecular Biology and a MHS (Masters in Health Science) in Cancer and Reproductive Biology from Johns Hopkins University. She obtained a Masters in Nursing from California State University, Los Angeles specializing in Adult-Gerontology Primary Care. Her previous experience includes cardiovascular surgery, hepatobiliary surgery, and wound care. Melissa maintains an interest in clinical research fueled by the philosophy that research is the key to bridging the gap between the present and the future, ultimately paving an intelligent path forward.

Interests

In her spare time, Melissa likes to read, watch movies, hike, and travel. Her most recent travel adventure was to Grand Canyon West where she traversed the expansive heights at the Skywalk, a glass enclosure allowing remarkable canyon views.
