Interview with Dr. Keith Hazleton, New KL2 Cohort 16 Awardee
We sat down with Dr. Hazleton, a recipient of the SC CTSI Mentored Career Development in Clinical and Translational Science award, to hear about his experience as a KL2 scholar and how he has furthered he professional goals. We look forward to seeing all he will accomplish in the coming years.
Tell us a little bit about your experience so far in the KL2 program.
I only just started on April 1, so my experience is quite limited. We have had meetings with leadership which have been good for getting to know the program.
How did you first learn about the program?
I sought out the program because a CTSI program at my previous institution (University of Colorado) supported my colleagues there in the early stages of their careers. So, when I got to CHLA I sought out SC CTSI.
What initially got you interested in starting this program?
I have been involved in research for over 20 years but with the pandemic I had been in more clinical positions. The KL2 was a great opportunity to for me to get my research career back on track

Tell us about your own background as a researcher in Pediatric GI and Hepatology?
During my fellowship, I studied how diet affects intestinal infection. I am drawn to interactions between microbes and their hosts and this research showed that what we eat can affect the microbes in our gut which in turn can affect outcomes to disease. I am using this grant to turn to the interactions between children with chronic liver disease and their gut microbes.
What drove you to specialize in this?
My PhD research was on the malaria parasite and how their metabolism interacts with ours. The gut microbe is similar, but in a much more complicated system. These complicated interactions in children are also changing with growth of the child making the questions so much more interesting.
What do you think that others can gain from this program?
The protected time to focus on research is a huge plus. To be excellent at something requires dedicated focus and this program really allows that.
Who else has been an integral part of your success in this program?
Dr. Burner and Ms. Dzekov have been very involved and supportive as I work on transitioning into the program.
