The Los Angeles County Department of Health Services (DHS) has published a Framework to guide investigators seeking to conduct research in DHS facilities.

The Framework covers the process for obtaining facility and DHS leadership review – a wholly distinct process from IRB approval – and the level of County support to be expected among a set of five research categories.  For example, research that is not well-aligned with the DHS mission and strategic priorities but has potential benefit to DHS patients falls into Category 3, in which the study must cover the cost of clinical services, supplies, staff time, and the cost of any negative operational impact from patient recruitment.  The intended aim is for a clear and transparent framework for what research may be supported by County resources and the DHS infrastructure.

Questions or comments regarding the Framework can be shared with Gary Garcia within the DHS offices of Clinical Affairs and the CMO at garygarcia@dhs.lacounty.gov
